Ajwa is the small, dark date grown around Madinah in Saudi Arabia. It's softer than most other varieties, with a caramel-like sweetness and a skin that wrinkles slightly as it dries. It costs more than Deglet Noor or Safawi at the same weight, mostly because Madinah's growing area is limited and demand for this specific variety stays high even outside Ramadan.

A single Ajwa date runs roughly 20-25 calories, most of it natural sugar (glucose and fructose), plus a small amount of fibre, potassium, magnesium and iron. That's a fairly standard nutrient profile for dried dates in general — Ajwa isn't dramatically different from Safawi or Sukkari on paper. What sets it apart is texture and price, not a unique nutrient the others lack.
Why the internet oversells it
Search for Ajwa dates and you'll find pages claiming they raise sexual drive, cure infertility, treat cholesterol, protect the liver, or ward off black magic. None of that holds up. The date's religious significance comes from its historical association with the Prophet's Madinah, not from any documented pharmacological effect — and the handful of lab studies cited online (usually on rats, at doses no one eats in food form) get stretched into cure-all claims they don't support. Storing it properly
Room temperature is fine for a week or two, but the sugars start crystallising on the surface after that. Keep Ajwa in an airtight container in the fridge (3-8°C) and it holds its softness for months. Frozen, sealed properly, it lasts even longer — most suppliers rotate stock well within a year, so freezing at home is really only worth it if you've bought in bulk.
