Mabroom is easy to walk past on a kurma stall. It sits between the near-black Ajwa and the darker Safawi, it is long and thin rather than round, and its reddish-brown colour looks almost plain next to them. If you have been searching for Kurma Mabroom Malaysia and are not sure what you will get, this guide covers what Mabroom is, how to recognise it, and where it fits when you buy dates here.
Where Mabroom comes from
Mabroom is a Saudi date from the Madinah region, the same broad area that supplies Ajwa and Safawi. Like every date sold here, it is imported. Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, so any Mabroom you see in a shop has come in from Saudi Arabia through an importer.
That matters when you read a label. A carton marked "Mabroom" should say Saudi Arabia. If it names another country, ask the seller what you are actually looking at.

What it looks and feels like
Mabroom is long and slender, reddish-brown, and semi-dry. The texture is chewy rather than melting. If you are used to soft dates like Medjool or Mazafati, Mabroom will feel firmer between the fingers and take a little more work to eat.
It helps to compare it with its two neighbours from the same region:
- Ajwa is small, roundish and near-black, with finely wrinkled skin, and it is soft.
- Safawi is longer than Ajwa, dark brown to black, and soft and chewy.
- Mabroom is the slimmest of the three and the lightest in colour, and it is semi-dry.
Those are descriptions, not a test for whether a date is genuine. Colour and size vary between batches and between importers, and nobody can confirm a variety by looking at one date. The label and the seller's answer about origin are what you go on.
Grades and how it is sold
Mabroom is often sold in grades such as A, AA or Jumbo. Those grades are each importer's own size sorting, not an international standard, so a "Jumbo" from one supplier may not match a "Jumbo" from another. When you compare two sellers, ask for the net weight of the pack and the origin, and work out the price per kilo from there. Our page on date grading systems in Malaysia goes through this in more detail, and the Kurma Mabroom price guide covers buying it by the carton.
When people buy it
Demand for all dates in Malaysia climbs before and during Ramadan, and again for Hari Raya open houses, wedding hantaran, kenduri and umrah gifts. Mabroom turns up in all of these. Its shape makes it easy to arrange in a tray or a gift box, and on a mixed platter it gives a lighter, slimmer date beside darker ones like Ajwa and Safawi. If you are putting one together, you can find beautifully arranged platters of dates to order online rather than building one by hand.
For an open house, a simple mix works well: one soft date, one semi-dry date like Mabroom, and one dark Madinah date such as Kurma Safawi. Guests get three different textures from one plate.

Buying Mabroom in Malaysia
Most Gulf dates are harvested from late summer into autumn, and new-season stock reaches Malaysia some weeks later. If you need a large amount for Ramadan or a wedding, order early and confirm in writing that the carton will be Mabroom from Saudi Arabia, in the grade you agreed. Busy months are when a seller is most tempted to fill a short line with something that looks similar.
Start with a small pack if you have never tried it. Chewy, semi-dry dates are not to everyone's taste, and it is better to find that out with a box than with a carton.
