Dates are close to 70-80% sugar by dry weight — mostly fructose and glucose, the same sugars your body pulls out of fruit generally. That's why a handful of dates from Malaysia's suppliers gets used as a pre-workout or afternoon-slump snack instead of a chocolate bar: the sugar content is similar, but dates carry it alongside fibre, potassium, and a chewy texture that slows down how fast you eat a serving.
Why dates aren't the same as a sugary snack
A date's fibre content — roughly 6-8g per 100g depending on variety — sits in the same flesh as the sugar, so your body processes the two together rather than getting a straight sugar hit the way you would from a fizzy drink or candy. That doesn't make dates a "health food" in some magic sense; it makes them a fruit, and fruit generally digests slower than refined sugar for exactly this reason.
Practically, this shows up in how people use them: a runner eating two or three dates before a long session, or an office worker keeping a box at their desk instead of biscuits. The energy is still coming from sugar. The difference is the packaging nature already built in.
Which variety, and why it matters
Not all dates suit the same use. Ajwa is dense and less sweet than Medjool, so it works well eaten a few at a time without feeling heavy. Medjool is large, soft, and very sweet — good as a single-piece snack but easy to overeat. Safawi sits between the two: firmer than Medjool, sweeter than Ajwa. If you're buying for daily snacking rather than gifting, ask your supplier which grade moves fastest with regular customers — that's usually the one people find easiest to eat often.
Buying fresh stock, not old stock
Dates don't spoil quickly, but they do dry out and harden with age, and a dried-out date is less pleasant to eat regardless of variety. A supplier who turns over stock regularly will have softer, glossier dates on the shelf. Ask about import dates on a carton before buying in bulk — a batch sitting in a warehouse for eight months tastes noticeably different from one that arrived last month.
